On the afternoon of August 29, 2013, an employee of the City of Tulsa, Robert Bower, was badly injured in an accident in which a gas line ignited. Bower was working at the site and received severe burns to his upper torso, face and hands.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Robert is unlikely to return to work. In addition to the excruciating pain caused his physical injuries, Robert – a proud man who has resisted accepting any assistance – has also been injured financially, leaving his wife and their foster children in an extremely difficult situation.
Robert’s union brothers and sisters at AFSCME Local 1180 have joined together in an effort to alleviate the family’s burdens. We began our effort by organizing a family-friendly benefit Carnival and Cookout, which will be held in Tulsa at Veteran’s Park, Saturday, September 28, 2013 from 4-8pm. We are inviting all City of Tulsa employees, union members, and their friends and family to participate. There will food, games, prizes, music and raffle for several great items donated by co-sponsors of the event.
In addition, we are accepting donations on behalf of the Bower family through the Bank of Oklahoma to build a benefit fund. AFSCME Local 1180 members are digging deep into their own pockets to assist their brother in this time of need. We are asking for solidarity donations from Tulsa resident’s and supporters of the City workforce.
Donations can be made at any Bank of Oklahoma branch:
