UNION’S ANSWER TO DISPUTE OVER EMPLOYEE PAY: "Stick to the contract!"
Posted On: Sep 22, 2013

Last month, two City of Tulsa employees from the LT unit learned the benefits of union membership when they were forced into a pay dis-pute that resulted in a grievance. Harold Brown and a coworker had been working "out of class" as Refuse Collectors for approximately four months, and decided to formally apply for the job. They were hired but were not properly compensated in accordance with Section 19.9 of the union’s contract which states, "[E]mployee’s pay shall be adjusted in accordance with the rules of pay involving promotion." Fortunately, Harold knew his rights and was prepared to stand-up for them. As a result, he and his coworker won their grievances, received their increases and will be awarded an estimated $2,000 in back wages. Proof that it pays to be union.
