AFSCME LOCAL 1180 PRESIDENT, MICHAEL RIDER, BECOMES CHAIRPERSON OF AFL-CIO’s PUBLIC EMPLOYEES COMMITTEE
Posted On: Jan 29, 2013
AFSCME Local 1180 President, Michael Rider (Left) and OK. State AFL-CIO President, James Curry (right) at the AFL-CIO Headquarters in Oklahoma City where long-time union leaders shared perspectives for building labor’s future.

Last year, in response to over attacks and insults made by the Commissioner of the Oklahoma Labor Department, Mark Costello, the Biennial Conference of the the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), a resolution was passed to establish a Committee that would unify the efforts of our state’s various public sector unions. Costello had referred to public workers, specifically teachers, as “feral hogs” and launched a company dedicated to reducing pay and protections for teachers. Shortly after formation of the AFL-CIO’s Committee, Michael Rider was recognized as the Committee’s chairman.

Next month, Rider intends to unveil a plan that will build Local 1180’s ties to other public sector unions, including firefighters, teachers, and others. He explains, “By bringing workers closer together, we can learn from each other’s shared experiences, and develop a greater spirit of solidarity that will win our members the respect and workplace conditions they’ve earned. This is just another aspect to our strategy.”
