The 1180 Civil Rights Committee has been meeting to discuss issues of concern to both union members and their communities. Recently, the Committee Chair, Vince McGee, has decided to begin a campaign working with fire fighters, local leaders of faith and others to draw attention to challenges faced by marginalized sectors of the Tulsa workforce and its community. McGee emphasized the importance of community involvement, and noted that AFSCME represents more minorities than any union in the region and said, “Diversity isn’t something we just talk about, we live it” and pointed out that 1180’s Executive Board is made up of “blacks, women, and others from all walks of life.” McGee says, “A union isn’t just about fighting for it’s members. It’s about due diligence and a better community.” Next month, the Committee will be getting out in the communities to register voters. Details: 918-895-0916.
